"Green Machine" Inquiry Unit—Year 10
More and more, we are looking to alternative fuel sources as the answer to many of our current environmental issues, including waste and recycling. With a little ingenuity and through extensive research and experimentation, entrepreneurs and scientists all over the world have developed workable concepts for deriving usable energy from otherwise unconventional sources.
Your challenge is to come up with an idea for a machine that runs on an alternative fuel source. Working in groups, research the innovations previously discovered in this field as inspiration for your designs. You are building this machine to serve an actual purpose; it must have a specific function intended to offer something that most people would find useful or helpful.
As you research and design the concept for your "green machine," think about what it will use as a fuel source that will also serve the purpose of reducing or eliminating a waste problem. Perhaps it's powered by waste product of some kind, or maybe it uses some recyclable material. Whatever your source, it must both operate your invention and provide relief to a global waste issue.
You will want to present your idea using blueprints you will design yourself. In two weeks, you will need to provide the patent office with a full explanation of how your machine works and its purpose in a technical manual form.
